IoT in mobile machines: STW offers AWS cloud connection and cyber security services

BIM (Building Information Modeling) has been one of the buzzwords in the construction industry for many years. BIM describes the approach of complete digital representation of the construction process from planning to construction (and even beyond). The AWS (Amazon Web Services) cloud computing ecosystem also offers suitable services for BIM applications. STW hardware and software make these AWS services easy to use for construction machinery manufacturers and operators.

The basis for using cloud services is the provision of machine data in a standardized and usable format. With the Basic IoT Bundle, STW offers a user-friendly option for securely sending the data collected by the machine's automation and sensor system to the cloud in accordance with industry standards. This makes it possible to use the mentioned cloud services for visualization, data processing or AI applications. The connection from the cloud to the machine also enables over-the-air updates or special machine software configurations. In addition, devices and SSL certificates can be managed using the IoT Bundle. The information generated can be easily transferred to existing ERP or CRM systems via a REST API (REST - Representational State Transfer).

Comprehensive cyber security measures

In addition to SSL certificate support, STW supports machine manufacturers with a wide range of additional cyber security measures. STW control units have security-on-chip modules and support secure boot to prevent manipulation right from system startup. The physical interfaces of the components are also designed to prevent direct access to the chip elements. Communication between the control hardware and software is also encrypted.

In addition, STW has a Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT) that identifies emerging cyber security threats and proactively closes security gaps. STW customers can help with that by reporting potential threats. Regular penetration tests and zero-day detection analyses are also part of the STW security concept.

Powerful wireless communication

On the hardware side, the data from the machine's automation system can be sent to cloud services using the TCG communication modules from STW via all common global mobile cell technologies (2G/3G/4G) or WiFi. Ethernet and CAN interface(s) on the machine enable data exchange with control systems, displays and sensors. The direct interface to the user is realized via USB, Bluetooth or WiFi.

This provides machine manufacturers and operators with a comprehensive, powerful and secure range of hardware and software to make cloud computing services usable for construction machinery. Users of the Basic IoT Bundle, Cyber Security Services and TCG receive basic support, tips and tricks from the STW Field Application Engineering Team.
