A powerful controller in compact format, with an integrated inclination sensor

With the ESX.4ct, STW has developed a compact controller based on the powerful Aurix platform. The controller offers an integrated acceleration and inclination sensor, for realization of additional functionality.

STW, the specialists for the automation of mobile machinery, have developed the ESX.4 products as a standardized family. From the largest controller, the ESX.4cl, to the very compact ESX.4ct, all STW mobile controllers utilize Infineon Aurix microcontrollers. Thanks to the standardized hardware and software platform, applications can be ported from one controller to another with minimal effort. Like other members of the family, the ESX.4ct controller can be programmed using C/C++, logi.CAD 3 (IEC6131-3) or MATLAB/Simulink, making it a powerful option for smaller mobile machines such as mini excavators, compact truck-mounted cranes or for implementing automated assistance and vehicle systems in larger machines.

Intelligent features for automated steering systems

The optional, integrated 6-axis acceleration and inclination sensor adds to the practicality of the ESX.4ct. It measures accelerations and rotation rates in all three spatial axes in a measuring range of ±2/±4/±8/±16 g and ±125 to ±4000 dps. In particular, this information can be used for position compensation for GNSS data. As Christoph Filser, product line specialist for control systems at STW explains: "Navigation modules for mobile machinery are usually located on the roof of the driver's cab. However, the data can be inaccurate for GNSS-guided steering or lane-keeping systems if the machine is, for example,  operating on a slope. For high-precision work, the position of the axles and implements must however be precisely determined. Errors in the position can be corrected using calculations based on the data from the inclination sensor."

Should the satellite navigation system be interrupted, the acceleration and angle data from the ESX.4ct's integrated sensor can be used to maintain guidance. The integrated sensor therefore contributes to greater safety, precision and work quality in the automated processes typically found in agriculture. With the ESX.4ct with integrated sensor technology, machine manufacturers benefit from a smart and economical solution that provides them with the relevant measurement data without having to add a dedicated sensor. "In the long term, the integration of intelligent filter algorithms that pre-process the measurement data and predict further dynamic responses is also conceivable. Such a functionality would enable even more precise position correction" explains Christoph Filser.

First choice for smart farming applications

Automated, high-precision steering systems are the basis for a wide range of smart farming applications. Optimum track guidance can minimize travel distances, working time and fertilizer use, meaning more efficient and resource-saving cultivation. The ESX.4ct also provides ISOBUS interfaces, making it a smart choice for the automation of agricultural machinery.

Like all STW control components, the ESX.4ct has been developed for use in the adverse conditions. The automation components have a protection class of up to IP69K and are ideally suited for use in all mobile machinery. Despite its compact size, the ESX.4ct offers a powerful 300 MHz processing core, up to 13 outputs and 14 multifunctional inputs, as well as several other interfaces, including up to 3 CAN interfaces (CAN FD ready). The sensor supply can be adjusted between 5 and 12 V with an available current of 250 mA. The inputs are configurable, SENT and Namur are supported and the 8 half-bridge outputs can also control PVG valves. With these features, the ESX.4ct from STW offers unparalleled versatility and performance.
