The increasing digitalization of mobile machinery is a central pillar of modern processes. Collecting, evaluating and transferring operating data is the digital basis on which machine availability can be improved and operating processes can be automated or optimized. Of course, this also applies to road construction.
Construction companies need smart assistance systems and digital services in order to create durable surface layers in road construction that meet the increasing demands of climate change and ever-increasing traffic. These digital services for comprehensive large-scale projects such as the (re-) construction of freeway sections require a smart cloud connection to ensure networking across machine and fleet boundaries or to use additional computing power via cloud computing services.
In addition to the wireless connection to cloud-based construction site management systems, the highly precise and time-critical positioning of feeders, pavers and compactors is particularly important in road construction. The processes must be perfectly coordinated to ensure the correct asphalt and ground temperature to achieve the desired load-bearing capacity of the road surface. Reliable and, above all, tamper-proof data transfer between machines and construction process software is essential. If the connection is interrupted - whether due to a cyber security breach or loss of wireless connection - and this results in defects in the surface quality, it can lead to expensive consequences for the construction company commissioned.
To prevent this and to digitally network construction machines securely, they must be equipped with secure and powerful connectivity hardware. With the TCG series, STW offers flexible and user-friendly programmable communication modules that guarantee a stable data connection with WiFi, Bluetooth and, above all, 4G/3G/2G connectivity. Thanks to compliance with the EU Cyber Security Directive RED-DA, machine operators are optimally protected against manipulation via wireless connections.
The integrated GNSS receiver as well as additional RTK information and, in future, optional inertial measurement systems for dead-reckoning support, ensure the centimeter-precise positioning of the machines required in road construction. The machine data is transferred to the TCG modules via CAN or Ethernet (optional Single Pair Ethernet) and from there to the cloud.
In addition to the hardware benefits of the TCG series, its user-friendly software environment is particularly impressive. STW provides a Board Support Package for the TCG, which makes a large number of software apps available for immediate use. This also includes the connection to the AWS (Amazon Web Services) ecosystem. The communication modules are prepared out-of-the-box for the use of the numerous AWS cloud computing services, for example for visualization or analysis of recorded construction data. The TCG can also be configured in a user-friendly way via a browser-based WebApp, without the need for additional software.
The TCG series therefore provides construction machinery manufacturers with a user-friendly, powerful and secure introduction to the use of cloud computing services, which can take the construction processes of machine operators and contractors to the next level.
