Cyber security in mobile machines: Challenges and solutions

Cybersecurity has long since arrived in the world of mobile machines, whether on construction sites, in municipal technology or in agriculture. Protecting digital processes is becoming increasingly important. Forthcoming EU directives now mean that cybersecurity must be taken into account from the very beginning of the design process for networked machines, including mobile machinery. But what are the specific challenges facing machine builders? What solutions are available today?

STW at bauma 2025: CRA-compliant automation and digitalization for mobile machines

At bauma 2025 in Munich, STW will once again be exhibiting as a technology specialist for the automation and networking of mobile machines. In addition to its tried-and-tested robust electronics solutions and its range of software for system design and application development, the long-established company from Kaufbeuren, Germany, will be presenting its service and cybersecurity offerings from April 7 to 13, 2025.

Mobile Controllers with Linux support

Manufacturers of construction and agricultural machinery expect user-friendly software development systems with which they can realize their applications. Proprietary systems can impose unwelcome limits on development engineers. Linux support on the co-processors of STW's ESX.4cl controllers offers an unprecedented degree of flexibility in the design of customized systems, as Christian Klausner, Director of Product Management at STW, explains in this interview.

Precision farming systems for agricultural technology

In the cultivation of large agricultural fields, automated systems are an important way to maximize efficiency and yields. Precision farming is a key concept here. Proof of Concept: Distributed computing power and 5G edge infrastructure for environment monitoring.

Edge computing with 5G, and storage and computing power in base stations, enable effective environment monitoring in mobile work processes. The combination utilizes the advantages of data pre-processing on the machine, additional data sources from stationary infrastructure and AI to build an overall picture in real time. STW developed a concept study, in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Vodafone, demonstrating the benefits of such distributed computing architectures.

Maximum machine efficiency and optimized drive design: An intelligent control solution for flywheel energy storage systems

Saving fuel and reducing emissions is an important aspect of all commercial operations, especially for mobile machinery. One solution for making the operation of construction and municipal machines more efficient is flywheel based energy storage, which absorbs energy during periods of low load and releases it again during peak loads. STW from Kaufbeuren supplies the ESX.3cs compact control unit for the energy management of such systems.

For a stereotype free career choice

This year's Girls' Day, in which STW traditionally participates, took place on April 28. On Girls' Day, interested school students can find out about careers, training and study opportunities in research, information technology, technology and science. At the electronics manufacturer STW, the focus was primarily on electronics and production related training. For example, the participants learned about the apprenticeship paths for electronics technicians for devices & systems, micro or production technologists and information technology specialists.

Hoping for a swift and peaceful resolution

At STW, we strongly believe in a democratic and peaceful coexistence. For many years, war has been unthinkable in Europe. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case.

As we watch the dreadful events that are unfolding in Ukraine, our thoughts are with the people directly affected by this war. Nothing can justify such an attack and the misery that it brings.

For the sake of all the people suffering because of this conflict, we hope that Russia will stop its attack, and that a peaceful and diplomatic solution will be found as soon as possible.

 

Developing ROVO AI

We are always working to help shape the latest trends in the world of mobile machinery. STW therefore participates in leading innovation projects such as the ROVO AI project. STW, HAWE, Robot Makers and Mattro are building this working machine based on the Mattro ROVO 3 as an application-neutral and emission-free technology demonstrator. The advantages of this approach for machine manufacturers and operators can be read in the detailed article in the German trade magazine O+P Fluidtechnik.

NEW INCLINATION SENSOR SMX.IGS-E

The inclination sensor SMX.igs-e is the first product of a completely newly developed generation of inclination and gyro sensors by STW, which is based on the use of MEMS sensor technology. This family is part of a new, future-oriented software and hardware platform. In addition, the STW software Toolchain openSYDE is supported, which allows easy integration of the SMX.igs-e into an existing application and which is used during the initial operation of sensors.

“MACHINE AUTOMATION LAB” – STW AND FRAUNHOFER IVI SET SEAL ON COOPERATION

A fundamental basis for autonomously working machines is already being created today with innovative technologies. STW has won an important research partner with the Fraunhofer Institute for Transportation and Infrastructure Systems IVI in Dresden for the collaborative R&D project “Machine Automation Lab“. On 11 July 2019, an event was held to celebrate the cooperation, at which the research group’s logo was presented to the public in a symbolic unveiling ceremony.

BCX - INTELLIGENT SWITCHING, MONITORING AND CONTROL OF POWER

With the BCX family, Sensor-Technik Wiedemann (STW) is presenting a new generation of on-board control units for mobile machines which combine the distribution of energy in the cabin with monitoring and control functions. The BCX family unites the advantages of the tried and tested ESX control units and flexible power distribution in one device. Through the separation of active and passive electronics, customer-specific versions can also be implemented inexpensively and rapidly.

AN EXTENSION TO THE ESX-FAMILY

An extension to the ESX family of mobile central control units: The new small control unit ESX-3CS

Sensor-Technik Wiedemann (STW) is to present a new member of its ESX family of mobile central control units at the Agritechnica 2017 in Hanover. Freely programmable, compatible with regard to input and output types to other members of the ESX family, and supported through the comprehensive STW toolchain, the ESX-3CS rounds off the third generation of successful ESX control units at entry level. With the introduction of the ESX-3CS, STW is also showing a new housing concept.
